Wishes in Rhyme

Today there was a gathering of friends, neighbours and kin-folk at a church in Courtice. We were celebrating my Aunt Jean's 90th birthday. After greeting cousins and aunts and uncles, I joined Dad and Elizabeth in the corner. Pretty sure Dad was put there so he couldn't easily tell people any of his reeeealllly bad jokes. He managed to anyway. Did you hear the one about Beethoven? Lots of head-shaking.

During the celebration, Dad was called up on stage. He had a poem to share. Dad's often asked to speak at such occasions and today was no exception. Earlier in the week, he hadn't been too sure what to say so brother Enos sailed in and offered to help out. Here's what they came up with...

Jean’s Day

Beneath the western, Tisdale sun
In November, nineteen and twenty-one
Was born a girl, a daughter known as Jean
To Muriel mom and Cecil dad
One of the first her parents had
The years would bring a few more to the scene

Out on the farm the family grew
The children, ten, the parents, two
The Thackeray clan all learned to work and play
In fields of amber wheat and corn
Then on to church on Sunday morn
And to and from their school, uphill, both ways

Five cents was each child’s share
At the Silver Stream agricultural fair
“The ice cream or the candy?”, each would think
And other times, dry goods galore
In Runciman, at the general store
Near the grain elevator, just past the curling rink

Then as the thirties came and went
Some money made, some money spent
The whole gang packed their lives and headed down
Ontario way on an eastbound train
With a whistle and a bell’s refrain
Gore’s Landing, then to Peterborough town

Then as a few more years unwound
While searching for a beau, Jean found
Her love named John, and soon the two were wed
In forty-six, church bells would ring
A choir and the birds did sing
As rings were placed and wedding vows were said

Soon children followed, the family grew
Jean and John saw life anew
Along came Glen and then his sister Gail
Third was little daughter Ann
Then little Johnny grew the clan
A house became a home on Prestonvale

And then for years near Rice Lake’s shore
At the Landing named for Thomas Gore
The annual family picnic had its home
Uncles, aunts and cousins all
Would meet and eat and have a ball
Brothers, sisters, one and all, could roam

One year, a floating plane flew in
And Uncle Stu asked with a grin
If anyone would care to take a ride
And Garnet said, “I’ll take that dare”
And as the two flew through the air
We wondered how he kept his lunch inside

Those picnics are a great display
How families can find a way
To gather near and stand on common ground
And learn of where they started from
And look to all the days to come
To celebrate with friends and kin around

And so, we turn to Jean this day
The Tisdale girl whose made her way
Through ninety years and send our wishes true
We raise a glass and hold it high
And see the twinkle in your eye
We wish to say from all of us, to you

Happy Birthday! And we love you.

Not bad, eh? I reckon I can hear an old country tune in there. A little Merle Haggard or Conway Twitty. Or George Jones.

As I left, I took a picture of the minister's parking space.

Alright, alright. It doesn't take much to make me laugh. But that's funny!

Where's Google Translate When You Need It?

As all two of my faithful readers may recall, Paul's birthday was last week. In the mail the other day, was a card from his Oom Douwe and Tante Magda in the Netherlands. I asked Paul to translate. Then I laughed. While he can understand some Dutch, he doesn't speak it well and apparently can't read it, either. Here's what we came up with...

1. Jeugdig - jeu in French is game; let's go with 'digs playing games'
2. Aantrekkelijk - not a clue (which, at times, could be referring to Paul)
3. Rijp - 'ripe' (pretty accurate; especially after eating chili or hard boiled eggs)
4. Interessant - 'interesting' (I'm betting this may actually be right)
5. Gezellig - 'graceful' - like a gazelle (laughing again)

Now, I know there are a couple of Dutchies who wander by here when they've completely run out of things to do and, of course, there's Marian who puts up with me and speaks Dutch. Can you help us out? Please? Hartelijk dank. (Hey! Not bad, eh!?)

It's Somebody's Birthday!

Long weekend coming up and someone has a birthday today. Nicely planned. Paul and Nolan are home today, wreaking havoc, no doubt, and getting the party started. Wonder if they'll stop for ice cream on their travels today. (They have to go to the dump. The sheer thrill of it all is nearly beyond words.) So, to mark this momentous occasion, I've included a picture of Paul with one of his heroes* - the great Bobby Orr. The man is so great, in fact, that we named a chicken after him.

Happy Birthday Darlin'!

* Note to All: I am also one of his heroes but I couldn't find a picture of us as readily available as this.
* Note to Paul: Yes, the picture is missing from your shrine - I will guard it with my life.

Birth Announcement

October 4th, 1930 - Today, in a Salvation Army-built Colony Home, on a farm in the Forester District near Tisdale, Saskatchewan, a boy was born. Garnet is welcomed into this world by his loving, and no doubt tired mother, Muriel and hard-working father, Cecil; a veteran of the War. He will very likely be tormented by his seven older brothers and sisters. Two more sisters will follow.  Despite difficult times, here and around the world, this young lad will have loads of fun as he grows up on the prairies. It is apparent that his mother will cut his hair, using a bowl. Garnet doesn't yet know, but one day he will be blessed with the best darn daughter he could imagine. She will be named, Liz.

Celebrating Good Times

Dad turns the big 8-0 next month. We originally had planned to completely ignore the day 'cause that's the kind of good-fer-nuthin' kids he raised. Brother Enos especially. But, after some thought, and for fear of pay-back, we planned a celebration. We discussed things with Elizabeth and decided on a party fit for a king...or, at least, for the king of bad jokes.

Sunday, we all met up at the Legion in Oshawa where we had rented the lounge for the afternoon. Shortly after 1, friends and family began arriving. All brought best wishes and many, as we'd requested, delivered their worst jokes. The best jokes of the day came from Cammy, who took three hours to work up his nerve to step in front of that microphone and deliver these beauts...

What do a hockey player and a magician have in common?
~ They both do hat tricks.

What's the messiest sport in Canada?
~ Basketball, because kids dribble all over the floor.

And then Cammy's profound wish to his Grandpa - "Happy birthday you old fart." Hee hee. Couldn't have said it better myself.

Can't Beat These Chips

The boys and I hit the Farmers' Market yesterday and picked up another flat of strawberries for drying. After putting them in the van, we returned and wandered around. Eventually we stopped at the Allin's Orchard table for some apples. I suggested the boys take a look at the apples and pick one. Apparently I should have been slightly more specific in my instructions - they both picked a candy apple. The guy behind the table laughed and told them that the pickers get really sticky when they take them off the trees. By the look on the boys' faces, they weren't too sure whether to believe him or not.

Once we finished at the market, we stopped at a friend's house to drop off the manual for our tent trailer that they're borrowing for the week. As I spoke with my friend, the boys bounced on their trampoline. We wished them a good trip and then over to Kawartha Dairy to pick up a week's worth of milk and a little ice cream treat.

Yesterday was Dorito's birthday, so, later in the day, the kids and I loaded into the van and went down to the Shwa. We sang a rousing yet slightly out-of-tune rendition of Happy Birthday (the 'live in a zoo' version), visited for a bit and then popped over to Dad's. Dad has decided to join Facebook - no small feat for a computer newbie. He had signed up and then couldn't get into his account. Riley, the resident expert, was there to assist. In no time, she was through to his page, had sent out a couple of friend requests and had a profile picture - of his lovely begonias - all set up. High-fives for the eleven-year-old. Then home.

Today was strawberry day. I spent the afternoon slicing up berries and arranging them on the trays. Dorito was kind enough to give us a basket of plums from Cookies' over-producing trees, so they were sliced up and are drying in the dehydrator alongside the berries. We tried drying plums a couple weeks ago and Cammy and Nolan love them. They can't wait to get their paws on them when they get up in the morning.

Fresh local produce ready to become strawberry and plum chips.

(Thank you Cookie and Dorito for sharing the goodies!)

Say Cheese and Happy Birthday

Ri likes taking pictures...of herself. The computer and her Facebook are loaded with self-portraits, usually posed with some goofy look on her face while giving the peace sign. Last week, Enos came by with Willie and Kokanee and Riley laid down on the floor and snapped this shot with the Koko-Puff. Aww, it's the Puff.

Today we celebrate the birth of our first taurus. This one, with a thing for cameras.

Happy 11th birthday, Ri!!!

Eight

Dear God. Cameron here. For my birthday, I'd really like it if the Montréal Canadiens won the Stanley Cup. My Dad says they will never beat the Boston Bruins. My Mum says it would kill my Dad if they did. He's already upset that I'm cheering for the Habs but how can I not cheer for a team that has a guy named Cammy on it? I mean, Mike Cammalleri is awesome. And so is Halak. Did you see all those shots he stopped against Washington? Well, God, that's it.

Sincerely, your friend, Cammy (the 8 year old one)

Happy 8th birthday Cammy!!!

Parties and Roadtrips

The boys' had their birthday party on Friday. We tried a combined one this year as they both wanted to go to Play Street and neither wanted to invite all that many kids. I think, total, including mine, there were eleven kids. Oh, wait, brother Enos would make it twelve. He did seem to be having a pretty darn good time.

Today, Dorito came up...and it was really freaking early for a Saturday. She informed me that she even went out and did her grocery shopping before she headed out. She was at our place about 8:30. The woman needs help. After a coffee (that I so desperately needed), we loaded up the boys and went up to Enos' place. There, we gave Kokanee and Willie big pets and scratches behind the ears. (Kokanee's been living with Enos since shortly after Waylon died. Kokie and Willie are brother and sister and are good company for each other so we figured this was best.) Next we took the backroads into Lindsay where we found a little restaurant for breakfast. Or, if you're Nolan, fries. Breakfast of champions, I'm sure. Then, with bellies full, we continued westward to check out the Kawartha auction barn in Woodville. As we drove, the sky became darker and the clouds opened up. It rained pretty good. Once there, we checked out the poultry and rabbits and then wandered to the sale
ring where they were auctioning off sheep. By the time we left we were pretty wet. It was kind of fun, though.

Five Years Old Today

Last night after I tucked my boys in, I told Nolan that this was the last time I'd get to kiss my four-year old good night. And this morning I get to holler to him "Good morning five year old!" for the first time ever. He liked the sounds of that...a lot. It was a big day at daycare yesterday too. Nolan's now old enough to play on the game cube. (I just pretend to know what that is.) He was pretty stoked talking about it at dinner.

Altogether now...

Happy 5th Birthday, Nolan!!!

Happy Birthday Darlin'!

Forty three years ago, a little ugly baby
was born in Oshawa,
the last of seven children.
(I can say this because Paul's Mum
has described him this way many times.)
.
Happy Birthday, Paul!

More Bull? But I'm Tired

My three darling bulls have now all celebrated their birthdays. I'm exhausted and have decided that's enough. So we're just going to skip the last one...no harm, no foul. What's that? Nobody gets off that easy? Drat. Well, I guess we might as well get on with it then.

Hmm. Kinda hard to come up with something to write about the last of the backward bulls. So, I'll let you do it. Be nice, now. Alright, here we go...

T minus 1....I better get to bed...

Who Doesn't Love Birthday Pie?

A Month of Bull - Part III

Phew! We get a bit of a break now before the next cake. Strike that - our next celebrator prefers pie. Ri's about to hit double-digits, the big one-oh. She's outgoing, a comedian, hates math, and, according to some of the boys at school, the least annoying of the girls to be seated with. A ringing endorsement if ever there was one. Lover of water, Tyro (her bear), the Calgary Flames (okay, deep down she could care less, but I'll take what I can get), her bike, and hanging out with her friends. The best birthday present a Mum could wish for. My girl. Riley.

Back up the clock. T minus 11 days and counting...

Bowling with His Buddies

We spent a couple of hours this afternoon in Millbrook. You know, at that cute little six lane bowling alley I mentioned a couple of weeks ago. There were two parties there - the princesses had the westerly three lanes, and we, with the batman party, had the easterly three lanes. And that made it a full house. The owner had to leave for a bit to head down to the Legion to vote, but she assured me she'd be back with the pizzas by the time we were done our game. Her friend took care of the shoes for us. You just don't get that kind of story in the city. :-)

Cammy's friends, Ben and Aaron from school, and his buddy Zach were there along with his cousins Bryce, Jakey-Jake, and their older brothers Mitchell and Kyle. Aaron's little brother, Mitchell, who will be starting school with Nolan in the fall also joined in. And can't forget Uncle Gooey who was the winner in his group - although just barely, I'm told. Little three-year old Mitchell won in the second group. Never did hear the results from the third group.

As our games ended, our pizzas arrived as promised. The kids dug into them and then we enjoyed the batman cake. Finally, Cameron opened some gifts from his friends. Everyone had a good time.

Nolan has asked if he can have his fifth birthday at the bowling alley next year.

Seven

Is it May 3rd? It is? Well then, it must be my brown-eyed boy's birthday!

Happy 7th Birthday, Cameron!!!

A Month of Bull - Part II

Alrighty. Up next - Cammy. The most stubborn of the backward bulls. (Oh, don't listen to Paul). Shy. Takes after his Uncle Gooey who calls him 'mini-me'. He's been around these parts for just about seven years. Shares his day with my Mum, another stubborn one. Lover of Pokemon cards, his green pockey, the Boston Bruins (where have I gone wrong?), and jelly sandwiches. My brown-eyed boy. Cameron.

Reset the clock. T minus 5 days and counting...

A Great Day

Nolan asked for white cake with white icing. This
followed his supper request - Kraft Dinner.
