It's all over the news now, that the WHO has raised the pandemic alert level to 5. This is the second highest level and means that they believe a pandemic is imminent. To be honest, though, I'm not all that worried about it...yet. I remember being much more concerned about SARS. But, we're in the early days of this and things could take a turn for the worse. So, I'm going to ask you to do something, 'kay? I'd like you to take stock of your food stores. "What?" you say. "She's gone off the deep end," you say. Humour me, alright?
If things go south, people may hunker down at home. And if that happens, store shelves could be emptied. Face masks are already flying off the shelves. What's that? You think I'm over-reacting. Ya. Could be. Like I said, though - humour me. Next time you're in the grocery store, pick up some extras, okay? Maybe some extra flour. Rice. Vitamins. Canned goods. Dog food. And if you haven't put in that veggie garden that you've been contemplating for years, well, there's no time like the present, is there? For lots of reasons. Go pick up some seeds.
With any luck, not much will come of this. And somewhere down the road, hopefully in the not too distant future, we'll all sit around and you'll point at me and laugh. And that's okay. I don't mind. But, tonight, could you pick up a few extras on the way home? I'd sure sleep better.
Yesterday it snowed on and off during the day and by the time I left work, the windows and mirrors were covered in snow. It was no big deal - I just wiped the snow off the mirrors with my hand and used the wipers on the windshield. Well, there was a bit of ice left behind so I started to get out to scrape. And guess what. No snowbrush.
We've been hit early with snow this year. Well, maybe it's not early for snow to come but it is early for snow to stay. We're not prepared. I need to dig out the snowbrushes and put them in the vehicles. And - what else?
I found this emergency car kit online and printed it. If this was a test - then we failed. Miserably. So, this weekend I'll be gathering up at least some of this stuff and storing it in our vehicles. And I'll add a bright piece of material that could be tied to the antenna as a signal to others that there's a problem. A collapsible shovel would make a great Christmas gift (hope you're not reading this brother Enos). Probably best to have waterproof matches. The van's going in on Saturday for tires. And it's time to renew the On-Star.
Are you ready?
