Pickers Delight
This little vacation has started out busy. The three trips to the dentist's office are done. Yea for me! The trip to the Market on Saturday was semi-productive. Brother Enos called me up Saturday morning and asked if I was going. I answered in the affirmative. He said he wanted to go and check it out so we agreed on a meeting place and found each other awhile later. The kids were thrilled to see their Uncle Gooey. We were wandering along the first aisle when I spotted the peaches. A woman had a flat of them and there were still lots there. So I decided, instead of picking them up right away, I'd get them on the way out; save carrying them around, you see. You know where this is going, don't you? Uh-huh. They were completely out when we got back there. I blame it on Enos.
The good news is that I picked up another flat of strawberries and they're all dried and tucked away now. Much to the rugrats' delight.
Sunday I had grand plans to get up, out the door and picking blueberries by 9, when they opened. Well, Paul was out late Saturday and, since he now works six days a week, I figured he deserved to sleep in. I'm good that way. So, I stuck around to play referee for the chilluns. It was also overcast and threatened rain all day. I didn't go. I blame it on Paul. And the weather forecasters.
So far, things don't sound all that busy, do they? Well. I spent three hours weeding the garden on Saturday. Looks lovely...as long as you don't wander too far along. And we've got beans coming out our...we've lots of beans. The kids love picking and delivering them to our neighbours. Of course, that could be because they often get a treat in return. Most recently, it was fudgesicles.
Today, I dried some more sage and oregano and froze lemon balm and basil. And, after supper, I went down and picked two buckets of blueberries. It was much nicer than last time. Cooler. Nice breeze. No mosquitoes. And it took about 2/3 as much time. Perfect. One buckets-worth is in the freezer now and most of the remaining berries will go in tomorrow. Hopefully I can get one more trip in this month and we should be set for a good while.

Those blueberries look tasty. I think there is about 1 week left of picking, no?
Yep, probably. When I was there a couple of weeks ago they were hoping to be open 'til the Labour Day long weekend. Seems to me we were there last year on the long weekend, and the pickings were pretty slim.
Enjoyed stopping in and catching up with your blog. Loved the bits about the grass bridge, wee trolls and hollyhocks. Also about freezing lemon balm. Didn't know one could do that. Did you just throw them in a ziplock and freeze or do they have to be dried first?
I've never saved lemon balm before so I went looking for the wee trolls for help. They must have still been sleeping (I heard snoring) so I resorted to the internet. It looks like you can dry or freeze lemon balm.
Here's info: "Lemon balm leaves can also be frozen which is the best way to preserve the lemon aroma. The aroma is rapidly lost, together with much of its therapeutic value when dried."

So, I washed them, gently patted them dry and tossed them in a mason jar then down to the freezer. I'm thinking now I probably should have laid them out on a cookie sheet like the blueberries, put them in the freezer and then in a jar. I'll probably try that if I do some more. The article also suggests ice cube trays but I hadn't read that far down. ;o)
I have some books [keepers] for you on preserving & pickling. Shall I leave them with mom for pick up? The pages that are marked are requests for samples!
Oooh. This must be Marian. Sure, leave them with your Mum, if you don't mind. And just how many pages are marked?
The title of one of the books is Lasagne Gardening. NO WEEDS. Not sure why I thought this book would be good for you. :>} I shall drop them off early next week.
Marian
Thanks Marian! (You didn't answer how many pages are marked, though.)
Liz, can you say, "sucker"?
